CT (Computed Tomography) scanners create a cross-sectional 3-D image slice of your pet’s body using x-rays.

This allows us to assess the body in a different way – it’s like looking through the body one thin “slice” at a time.

How will we use CT?

CT scans allow us to assess areas that conventional x-rays and ultrasound have more difficulty with, for example the head.

Pets usually require sedation or general anaesthetic for their scans. The scan itself is quick, and using CT means that we can obtain detailed images quickly, helping us to plan the most appropriate treatment or surgery for your pet.

The following conditions and scenarios can benefit from CT scanning:

• Bone and joint problems.
• Lung and chest disease.
• Cancer investigation and staging.
• Nasal and sinus diseases.
• Middle ear disease.
• Orbital disease.
• Abdominal cavity pathologies.
• Spinal conditions, such as intervertebral disc disease.
• Head and skull problems.
• Abdominal diseases.

This service will greatly enhance our diagnostic capability for our patients. We will also be offering a CT-only referral service to local practices.

We currently offer this service as a fixed fee all-in package. This includes GA, sedation, day hospitalisation, fluids, and a CT scan and report sent to the referring vet.

Once received, we will contact the client directly to book in and take them through the logistics on the day, including admissions time and what the days process will look like. Please ensure clients have consented to you providing us with their contact details and any insurance information.

More information

All CT scans require general anaesthesia or sedation. Most of the scans will use intravenous contrast media and therefore patients will be with us for most of the day to receive intravenous fluids to reduce the risk of kidney injury and we will discuss this with the client when we contact them.

All animals will have a physical examination on admission for the scan. Although we accept referral cases for full case management, this service is a CT scan-only referral service, and therefore all CT reports will be sent back to the referring veterinary practice to continue the case there.
